2009 Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship For High School SeniorsFor the 17th year, the Pittsburgh Penguins will award an annual Pittsburgh Penguins/Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship to a Western Pennsylvania high school senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, good citizenship and school/community involvement. The student should demonstrate an intense love for the game of hockey personified by on-ice hustle, achievement beyond his talent level, leadership, sportsmanship and teamwork. This year, the Penguins have increased the value of the scholarship to $5,000. All completed scholarship applications must be mailed to the Penguins office no later than Friday, April 17, 2009. The Penguins are proud to offer this scholarship to help deserving student-athletes continue their hockey and academic careers. This award is named in honor of a man who helped thousands of high school, college and professional athletes become better people as well as outstanding students and athletes. ![]() Scholarship applications for the Pittsburgh Penguins 2009 Inner City Scholarships are now available for deserving seniors at City of Pittsburgh high schools. The Penguins will award a total of three (3) scholarships, each valued at $1,000, for the 2008-2009 school year. The scholarship was started in 1992 and has been presented annually to high school seniors for academic excellence, extra curricular school activities and community service. The guidance counselor at each school has received student applications. You can also download the scholarship application from this site. ![]() The Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association will award its third annual scholarship worth $2,000 to a western Pennsylvania high school senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, good citizenship, school and community involvement, and who has shown an intense love for the game of hockey personified by on-ice hustle, achievement beyond his talent level, leadership, sportsmanship and teamwork. The Association encourages students to closely review the criteria and nomination forms included in this packet before determining whether to apply. When applying, please distribute the appropriate forms to your school’s head hockey coach and academic advisor. The Penguins have a special long-standing partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania.Both organizations have joined forces to provide at-risk, inner-city children with an after-school tutoring program titled “Power Hour.” The program is designed to improve academic performance for children experiencing difficulty at their local schools. The overall goal is to ensure upward movement for each child through the educational system. The Penguins provide a variety of incentives for the children to obtain by earning points for completing homework assignments and reaching specific goals. The “Power Hour” after school program has proved quite successful at the local Boys & Girls Clubs. ![]()

A delight for children of all ages, Pittsburgh Penguins mascot Iceburgh not only provides Penguins fans with energetic game night entertainment but this large, fluffy bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area.Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all Penguins events and appearances. In 2005, the “Iceburgh Goes to School” program was created with Iceburgh visiting local elementary schools for question & answer sessions with the students. He also serves as a unique “guest reader” at elementary and middle schools. His skill with animation entertains the students as they listen to their official book reader. Along with a host of community festivals, fairs and fundraisers, Iceburgh’s annual community calendar includes visits to the Western PA School for the Blind Family Day, Western PA School for the Deaf, Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides Walk, City of Pittsburgh’s Mascot Skate, Heinz Regional History Center benefits and a variety of Relay for Life event locations. |
