Penguins Ladies Serve The CommunityOver the 2007 holiday season, Penguins wives and girlfriends held their annual Holiday Online Auction to benefit The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh. The ladies uniquely decorated Christmas stockings and filled them with gifts reflecting the interests of the players. Each stocking contained autographed items. The stockings were then auctioned online through the NHL and Penguins websites. The auction raised over $13,500 for The Children’s Institute, an organization dedicated to the well-being of children, young people and their families and to providing services that meet their special needs. During the 2007-08 season, the ladies also filmed a public service announcement for the Animal Friends shelter, created a charity cookbook for the food bank and collected toys for the US Marines Toys for Tots program. ![]() |
Pens Partner With The Bank Of New York Mellon For United WayThe Penguins partnered with The Bank of New York Mellon throughout the 2007-08 season to make a $25,000 contribution to the local chapter of the United Way. The Bank of New York Mellon employees served as volunteers at Melon Arena gates prior to Penguins games to pass out promotional items to fans entering the building. To support the United Way’s host of social service programs and as an expression of appreciation to Mellon employees, the Penguins organization presented a donation check to the United Way agency on March 22, 2008.![]() |
Penguins Alumni Support Local ChildrenIn 1998, the Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association created its signature event, the Alumni Charity Golf Classic, to benefit local children’s charities. Over the past 10 years, the event has donated over $$260,000 to charitable organizations with an emphasis on children. Benefactors include the Pittsburgh Sledge Hockey Team, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Heart Camp, Achieva, Pennies from Heaven, Life Steps, the W.PA School for the Deaf and the Mario Lemieux Foundation. In 2001, the Alumni Charity Classic featured a reunion of the 1991 Stanley Cup Championship Team. ![]() |
Booster Club ActivitiesThe Penguins enjoy a long-standing partnership with the team’s Booster Club. During the 2007-08 season, the Penguins teamed up with the Booster Club for the collector’s second-in-a-series pewter Christmas ornament sale at home games in December. The promotion raised funds for the Booster Club’s official charity – the Autism Society of Pittsburgh. Booster Club members also volunteered at the Penguins annual food, toy and cell phone collections. Club members also manned the NHL All-Star Fan Balloting area during the balloting period assisting fans with the voting process. ![]() |
Penguins Annual Food Drive Sets RecordPenguins fans set a new record for community service in November 2007 when the team held its annual “Score Against Hunger” food drive for the benefit of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Fans donated over 3,793 lbs. of non-perishable food and $3,583 in cash donations to help feed the hungry at local community shelters and food pantries where the need for food has increased tremendously over the past year. The Penguins surpassed the amount of food and cash donations from all previous food drives. Fans making donations were eligible to win autographed Penguins memorabilia during the game. ![]() |
Central Blood Bank DrivesFor the past 15 years, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Central Blood Bank have joined forces to save lives. Since 1992, the Penguins have participated in the Labor Day Weekend drive which is scheduled at a time when blood donations typically drop to critically low levels. A long summer of low donation rates often culminates in a severe shortage of blood by September. The Penguins “Score One For Life” blood drives have yielded over 12,700 registered donors and over 10,800 units collected. ![]() |
Penguins & Fans Shatter Records At Toys For Tots DrivePenguins fans shattered all previous records for donations at the annual toy collection in December 2007 when the team held its annual toy drive for the benefit of the US Marines “Toys for Tots” program. Fans were encouraged to bring unwrapped new toys to the game or to make a cash donation to help purchase toys for underprivileged children in the Pittsburgh area. Penguins players wives, girlfriends and Booster Club members joined Marines at Mellon Arena gates for the collection. The Penguins surpassed the amount of donations from all previous toy drives collecting over 1,636 toys and $4,769. Fans making donations were eligible to win autographed Penguins memorabilia during the game. Since 1992, Penguins fans have donated over 12,136 toys and $27,419 at the team’s toy drives. ![]() |
First-Ever Cell Phone DriveFor the first time, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Verizon Wireless teamed up on February 23, 2008 to support the Womansplace shelters and assist victims of domestic violence by hosting a cell phone collection. The Penguins players’ wives and girlfriends accepted donations at the arena gates and fans made the collection a success by donating more than 575 used cell phones and a variety of accessories; as well as $684.00 in monetary donations. Fans making donations were eligible to win autographed Penguins memorabilia during the game. After the collection, Verizon Wireless refurbished and recycled the donated cell phones and made a donation in the amount of $1,000 to the Womansplace shelters. ![]() |
