MARIO LEMIEUX
Co-Owner/Chairman

Mario Lemieux achieved yet another first in his Hall of Fame career in 2009 when he became the first person to win a Stanley Cup as both an owner and a player.

The Penguins’ Cup championship fulfilled a dream Lemieux began in September, 1999, when he led a group of investors that bought the franchise out of bankruptcy. As team captain, Lemieux won Stanley Cups as a player with the Penguins in 1991 and 1992.

Even before defeating Detroit in the 2009 Cup Final, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had established themselves as one of the premier ownership groups in the NHL, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 118 straight games, sold out every suite at Mellon Arena for two straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits.

The Penguins also were named the fastest-growing brand in the NHL by Forbes magazine, and the team ranked No. 3 in fan relations in all of professional sports in a survey conducted by ESPN The Magazine.

The new Consol Energy Center, currently under construction across the street from Mellon Arena, is another gleaming achievement of the Lemieux-Burkle era. After a lengthy quest for a new building that would ensure the team’s long-term future in Pittsburgh, the owners reached agreement on a new arena deal with Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl in March, 2007.

Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP in addition to two Stanley Cups.

An immaculately gifted 6-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033).

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity.  More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.
  RON BURKLE
Co-Owner

Ron Burkle has now added a Stanley Cup to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world.

Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 11th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports.

Burkle was a key figure in negotiations for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh, and the Consol Energy Center is expected to generate economic development and benefit the entire Pittsburgh region when it opens for the
2010-11 NHL season.

Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for two-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the fastest growing brand in the NHL (Forbes Magazine). By spending to the limit of the salary cap in 2008-09, the Penguins were able to develop a team that reached the Stanley Cup Final for the second straight season and brought home the third Cup in franchise history.

Ron enjoyed sharing the Stanley Cup experience, including the victory parade through the streets of Pittsburgh, with his son, Andrew.

Burkle founded The Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. He is currently a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, KB Home and Yahoo!

Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

KEN SAWYER
CEO

Ken Sawyer is in his 11th season as a senior executive with the Penguins, including his fifth season as CEO. In his current role, he is in charge of all of the Penguins’ operations, including the construction of the new Consol Energy Center.

Sawyer has overseen the development of the new arena and its financing, culminating with the announcement by state and local officials of an arena funding plan in March, 2007 – which ensured the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh. The Consol Energy Center will open for the start of the
2010-11 NHL season.

Sawyer also helped reshape the Penguins’ fortunes on the ice when he hired Ray Shero as executive vice president and general manager in May, 2006.

Sawyer represents the Penguins in all league matters and is a member of the NHL’s Board of Governors.

He joined the Penguins in 1999 as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, and has been a key advisor to Mario Lemieux throughout his tenure. He steered the Penguins through a vast rebuilding program, the NHL lockout and the quest for a new arena, and his efforts culminated in a Stanley Cup championship in 2009.

Sawyer’s career spans 38 years – including 14 as the Chief Financial Officer of the National Hockey League and the past 10 as an executive of the Penguins. He served as team president from 2003 until January of 2006, when he was named CEO.

Sawyer is a graduate of McGill University in his native Montreal. He and his wife, Shirley, reside in Pittsburgh. They have two sons and three grandchildren

DAVID MOREHOUSE
President

Pittsburgh native David Morehouse is in his third season as president of the Penguins. He oversees tickets sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development for the Stanley Cup champions, as well as representing the team in corporate relations, governmental affairs and future redevelopment of the Mellon Arena site.

Morehouse implemented the brand strategy that saw the Penguins named the “fastest growing brand in the NHL” by Forbes Magazine. The team has set records for consecutive sellouts (118), suite sales, local television ratings and website traffic while displaying a strong commitment to community outreach.

Morehouse came to the Penguins in December, 2004 as a Senior Consultant on the new arena project, bringing with him extensive national experience in political decision-making, strategic planning and project development. He was named team president in April, 2007.

He served as Senior Advisor to the John Kerry for President campaign, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House, at the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill during much of the 1990s, including a stint as Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Overall, he worked on four Presidential campaigns.

Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University. He received a master’s degree in public administration from the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children. The Morehouse family lives in Bell Acres.
