The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Thomas Greiss to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

The deal has an average annual value of $1 million.

Greiss, 28, played for the Arizona Coyotes this past season, going 10-8-5 with a 2.29 goals-against average, .920 save percentage and two shutouts in 25 games.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound left-handed catching netminder had previously played three-plus years for the San Jose Sharks, who originally drafted him in the third round (94th overall) of the 2004 NHL Draft.

The native of Fussen, Germany has played in 69 career NHL regular-season games with San Jose and Arizona, posting a 27-24-8 record with a 2.43 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage.

Greiss has represented his native Germany in two Olympic Games in 2006 and ’10.

Greiss also played three-plus years with the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League (AHL), posting AHL career highs with 57 games played and a 2.47 goals-against average in 2008-09.
