Derrick Pouliot Named Canadian Hockey League Defenseman of the Year

Penguins prospect defenseman Derrick Pouliot, who skated for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this past season, was named the CHL Defenseman of the Year today.

The CHL is the umbrella organization for Canadian major junior hockey, overseeing the WHL, Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

Pittsburgh’s first-round draft pick (8th overall) in 2012, Pouliot had previously won the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy, which goes to the WHL’s defenseman of the year, and he was named to the Western Conference First All-Star Team.

Pouliot was one of highest-scoring junior defensemen in 2013-14, placing third among WHL blueliners during the regular season with a career-high 70 points (17G-53A) in 58 games.

During the postseason, the 20-year-old Pouliot ranked first among WHL defensemen with 32 points (5G-27A) in 21 games. His 27 assists were twice the next-closet D-man and his 32 points were nearly double the second-place finisher. Pouliot helped the Winterhawks reach the WHL Finals, where they fell to the Edmonton Oil Kings.
