PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark will build five more dek hockey rinks for local communities this summer as their first-of-its-kind "Project Power Play" program enters its third year.

The new rinks are scheduled for Renzie Park in McKeesport, Bloomfield Park in Pittsburgh, Settler's Cabin in Oakdale, North Park in Allison Park and Graham Park in Cranberry Township.

"Project Power Play" is a $2.3 million initiative designed to build 12 dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is leading the way by providing $1.5 million in funding.

The rinks are multi-purpose courts measuring 155 feet by 75 feet and are suitable for other sports including soccer and lacrosse. They include a premier dasher board system, a Daktronics scoreboard, player benches covered by metal shelters, a penalty box, goals located at each end and start-up dek hockey equipment.

"Project Power Play" was introduced in 2012, with the first two rinks being built in Banksville Park in Pittsburgh and Lewis Park in Hazelwood. Four more rinks were added at Brookline Memorial Park in Pittsburgh, Hosanna House Sherwood Event Center in Wilkinsburg, Riverside Park in Oakmont and Richland Community Park in Wexford.

All rink sites were chosen based on a community's need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming.
