The Pittsburgh Penguins’ top draft selections the past two years – defenseman Derrick Pouliot and goaltender Tristan Jarry – were honored by the Western Hockey League (WHL) on Friday.

Pouliot, drafted by the Penguins in the first round (8th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft, was named to the Western Conference First All-Star Team and he was nominated for the WHL Defenseman of the Year Award.

Pouliot, 20, currently places third among all WHL defensemen with 70 points (17G-53A) in 58 regular-season contests for the Portland Winterhawks. He has established career highs across the board offensively.

Jarry, 18, whom the Penguins chose in the second round (44th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft, was selected to the Eastern Conference First All-Star Team and he was nominated for the WHL Goaltender of the Year Award.

Jarry, who plays for the Edmonton Oil Kings, leads all WHL goaltenders in wins (44), goals-against average (2.24) and shutouts (8) in his first year as the team’s No. 1 netminder.

Pouliot was nominated for Defenseman of the Year alongside Prince Albert’s Josh Morrissey; Jarry will battle Kelowna’s Jordan Cooke for Goaltender of the Year.
