University of Nebraska-Omaha junior forward Josh Archibald – the Penguins’ sixth-round (174th overall) draft selection in 2011 – was named National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) player of the week for the third time this season.

Archibald, whose 26 goals this season rank second among all NCAA skaters behind only Johnny Gaudreau of Boston College (29 goals), finished with three goals and an assist in two games played last weekend.

The 5-foot-10, 181-pound Archibald opened the weekend with a goal and an assist in the Mavericks’ 5-1 win against Western Michigan on Friday. He scored twice in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos the following night.

Archibald, one of the leading contenders for the Hobey Baker Award – college hockey’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy – has 38 points (26G-12A) in 30 overall contests this season. In NCHC conference-only games, Archibald leads all scorers with 18 goals and 27 points.

Archibald heads into this weekend’s back-to-back home games against Colorado College on Friday and Saturday averaging 0.87 goals per game this season. That’s almost identical to the NCAA-leading 0.88 average Gaudreau (29 goals in 33 games) has amassed.

Penguins fans can help support Archibald’s quest to win the Hobey Baker Award by voting once per day at http://hobeybaker.com/awards/the-hobey-baker-memorial-award/vote. Voting will run until March 9 at midnight.
