Pittsburgh Penguins and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward Brian Gibbons was selected to play in the 2014 AHL All-Star Classic February 11-12 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, it was announced today by the American Hockey League.

Gibbons, 25, was chosen as an AHL All-Star for the first time in his career.

Despite playing in just 23 AHL contests, Gibbons leads WBS in scoring this season with 27 points and 18 assists. He is three points shy of equaling his AHL career high of 30 points, which he established each of the past two years in 70 games both seasons.

Gibbons, whom the Penguins signed as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College, has been one of WBS’ top penalty killers this season, ranking third (tied) among all AHL players with two shorthanded goals.

The Braintree, Massachusetts native is currently playing with the NHL Penguins, where he has recorded five points (2G-3A) in 11 games. Gibbons scored Pittsburgh’s opening goal on a breakaway in Monday’s Penguins 5-4 shootout victory.

Gibbons made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh on Nov. 18 against the Anaheim Ducks, scoring his first NHL goal and adding an assist in the Penguins’ 3-1 win.
