Pittsburgh Penguins defensemen Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin were named to the United States Men’s Olympic Hockey Team, it was announced this afternoon by USA Hockey.

Orpik will be competing in his second straight Olympics after helping the Americans capture a silver medal in 2010 at the Vancouver Games.

This will be Martin’s first Olympic appearance. He was named to the original United States’ roster in 2010, but he had to miss the Olympics due to injury.

Orpik played in all six games for the Americans in the 2010 Games, finishing with a plus-2. He has also suited up internationally for Team USA at the 2006 World Championships and the 2000 World Junior Championships.

This season, Orpik has played in 34 games, registering eight points (1G-7A) and a plus-4. Among American defensemen, Orpik ranks second in hits (97) and 10th in both blocked shots (69) and shorthanded time on ice per game (2:50).

Martin has worn the red, white and blue four times previously, most recently at the 2008 World Championships when he was named one of the Americans ‘Top Three Players’ after collecting eight points (1G-7A) in seven contests.

Martin has also played for Team USA in the 2005 World Championship, the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2001 World Junior Championships.

Currently, Martin is out of Pittsburgh’s lineup due to a broken tibia. Prior to getting hurt, he had 11 points (2G-9A) in 23 games. He places third among all American D-men this year in average time on ice (25:16) and blocked shots per game (2.3).

Orpik and Martin join a heavily Penguins-influenced Team USA roster that includes head coach Dan Bylsma, associate general manager Ray Shero, assistant coach Tony Granato and video coordinator Andy Saucier.
