Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was named NHL ‘Second Star’ for the week ending Dec. 22 on Monday afternoon.

Crosby notched eight points (2G-6A) in four games last week – all Penguins victories – the second-highest total among all NHL players behind only Colorado’s Matt Duchene (9).

Crosby, who currently leads the NHL with 54 points (20G-34A), began the week by scoring the third-period game-winning goal in a 3-1 defeat of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 16 at CONSOL Energy Center. The goal was his team-leading fourth game-winner of the year.

In his next two contests, back-to-back games at the NY Rangers and versus Minnesota on Dec. 18-19, Crosby recorded a pair of assists each night.

Crosby concluded his week by scoring his 20th goal of the season – the first time he’s reached that mark since 2010-11 – and added two helpers in Saturday’s 4-3 win against the Calgary Flames.

The NHL’s ‘Second Star’ for October, this is Crosby’s third weekly award of the year. He was named ‘Second Star’ for the week ending Oct. 20 and ‘Third Star’ for the week of Oct. 7-13.
