Hockey Canada announced today that Penguins prospect defenseman Derrick Pouliot was invited to Team Canada’s National Junior Team selection camp, which begins Dec. 12 at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence in Etobicoke, Ontario.

Pouliot will be one of 25 players (15 forwards; 8 defensemen; 2 goaltenders) auditioning for a spot on Canada’s entry at the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship, which will be held Dec. 26, 2013-Jan. 5, 2014, in Malmo, Sweden.

Canada’s final 22-man roster must be submitted by Dec. 25.

This marks the second-straight year that Hockey Canada has invited Pouliot, 19, to its WJC selection camp. The high-scoring blueliner nearly made Canada’s roster last year before being one of the team’s final omissions as one of the youngest players invited to camp.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Pouliot recently represented Hockey Canada last week when he suited up for Team WHL for two games in the Subway Super Series against the Russian National Team. Pouliot totaled a goal and an assist during the exhibition series that is used alongside the selection camp to help finalize Canada’s final roster.

Pouliot, Pittsburgh’s first-round draft pick (8th overall) in 2012, is once again starring for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL), registering seven goals, 18 assists and 25 points in 24 games this year. The Weyburn, Saskatchewan native leads Portland defenders in all three categories.

Pouliot, who scored a power-play goal in two exhibition games with Pittsburgh in September, has previously represented Team Canada at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, where he earned a gold medal, and the 2010 Under-17 Challenge when he was named to the tournament all-star team. He also skated in last season’s Subway Super Series against Russia.
