Nov. 2 is USA Hockey’s Try Hockey for Free Day, which is a program designed to provide youth hockey associations and local ice hockey rinks a national platform to introduce new kids to the sport. Taking place during Come Play Hockey Month, it's an amazing opportunity for kids to get on the ice for the first time and try hockey at no expense.

Over 16,000 kids ages 4-9 across the country tried hockey for the first time during last year’s events, and USA Hockey is looking to build on the excitement of the upcoming Olympic Winter Games to host a record number of participants this winter.

Focusing specifically on Western Pennsylvania, the region has shown remarkable and rapid growth when it comes to its youth hockey population. According to USA Hockey, the numbers in that side of the state grew by 4,395 players over an eight-year span from 2005-13, which is a 50.7 percent increase. And hopefully, they will continue to grow even higher after this Saturday..

Pittsburgh area ice arenas that will be offering programs on Saturday include:·
  • Belmont Ice Arena, Kittanning, from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm
  • Bladerunners Ice Arena, Harmarville, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
  • Center Ice Arena, Delmont, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • Kirk Nevin Ice Arena, Greensburg, from 2:45pm to 3:45 pm
  • S&T Bank Arena, Indiana, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Equipment will be available for newcomers to wear on the ice. To find a rink hosting a Try Hockey For Free session near you, go to USAHockey.com or visit http://www.tryhockeyforfree.com/#map.
