POULIOT MAKING HIS CASE
There is a logjam on defense for the Penguins right now. They have a lot of gifted blueliners, but not enough roster spots. There is certainly some tough competition, and at Saturday’s open scrimmage at CONSOL Energy Center Derrick Pouliot made a case for himself.

Pittsburgh’s 2012 first-round pick (eighth overall) scored one goal and set up a second as his team, Group A, triumphed 3-0 over Group C.

“I had a good offensive day,” Pouliot said after. “That’s part of my game. I’m trying to work on that and implement it. I’m getting more comfortable.”

SCRIMMAGE RECAP
During the Penguins open practice scrimmage on Saturday morning Group A pulled out a 3-0 victory over Group C at CONSOL Energy Center.

The Penguins’ new third line – Jussi Jokinen, Brandon Sutter and Matt D’Agostini – contributed with two goals while 2012 first-round pick defenseman Derrick Pouliot chipped in with a goal and an assist.

D’Agostini started the scoring with some nice hands in tight on the goal. He had the puck one-on-one at the crease and juked out goalie Eric Hartzell. D’Agostini, who signed with the Penguins this offseason, then slid the puck under Hartzell’s pad for a 1-0 Group A lead.

Later in the opening period, Pouliot showed excellent vision and great hands when he swept a cross-ice pass to Jokinen at the side of the net. Jokinen quickly snapped the puck past the outstretched paw of Hartzell to make it 2-0.

Pouliot finished off the scoring in the second period. A puck squirted loose from a mass of bodies and onto the 19-year-old defenseman’s stick at the point. He skated the puck into the slot and then roofed a shot over the shoulder of Jeff Zatkoff.

NEW THIRD LINE
One of the questions heading into training camp was who would play on the team's third line? For several years in Penguins' history the third line consisted of Matt Cooke, Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy. But with all three of those players gone, the team's third line will need to find a new group and new identity.

The Pens started training camp using Brandon Sutter, Jussi Jokinen and Matt D'Agostini.
