Penguins Elite Host "Icebreaker Tournament"
The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program is hosting a tournament at CONSOL Energy Center this weekend to open the upcoming season. The event, known as the “Icebreaker Tournament” features three age groups and teams from across North America. The tournament is sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite will have a team represented in each of the three different age groups.
Also competing are the Atlanta Fire and Exton Bulls in the 2001 Teams, the Atlantic Selects (Nova Scotia), Washington Little Caps and Victory Honda in the 2002 Teams and the Columbus Blue Jackets AA (2002), Tampa Bay Jr. Bulls and Steel City Renegades in the 2003 Teams.
Former Stanley Cup winning Penguin Mark Recchi is the assistant coach for the 2001 Team, and his son is competing in the tournament. Also, reigning NHL scoring champion Martin St. Louis’ son is participating for the Jr. Bulls.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite are a Tier I Elite league program that features fourteen teams (nine boys and five girls). Former Penguin player and coach Randy Hiller is the skill development/coaching consultant for the organization.
