Birth Date: May 11, 1992
How the Pens Acquired Him: Drafted in 3rd round (80th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft

Claim to Fame: Led the United States to a gold medal at the 2010 Under-18 World Junior Championships. Rust scored four goals, the second most on Team USA, to guide the Americans to a championship in Belarus.

2012-13 Season: His junior season with Notre Dame was a breakout for finding the back of the net. Rust scored 15 goals and tied for the team lead by adding 19 assists. His 34 points were second on the Fighting Irish, as he played in all of Notre Dame’s 41 games on the way to winning the CCHA regular-season title.

Numbers Never Lie: Rust found his goal-scoring prowess in preparation for the 2010 World Under-18 Junior Championships. Playing in 65 games for the U.S. National Team Development Program, he collected 26 goals and 26 assists in the 2009-10 season. It was his last year before heading to South Bend for college hockey.

Rust on his improvements scoring goals: “That's actually the biggest key to my game, I've got to keep my confidence up. (I’m) just looking to be a little more creative in the offensive zone. I can kind of think a little bit too responsibly sometimes, trying to not make mistakes. I have to maybe make a move, make a move, get a little more creative."
