Getting to Know: Matia Marcantuoni
Size: 6-foot, 197 pounds
Birth Date: Feb. 22, 1994
How the Pens Acquired Him: Drafted in 4th round (92nd overall) of 2012 NHL Draft
Claim to Fame: He was referred to by The Hockey Writers as "The Usain Bolt of Hockey" in 2011 for his elite speed. Writer David O'Connor said one of Marcantuoni's favorite plays is a rush down the right side and cut directly to the net.
2012-13 Season: In his third season playing for the Ontario Hockey League’s Kitchener Rangers, Marcantuoni appeared in a career-high 64 games and recorded 25 points. Though his goal numbers were down (seven last season compared to an average of 10 goals the previous two), he collected a career-high 18 assists.
Numbers Never Lie: Before he suffered injuries in his 2011-12 season, Marcantuoni was ranked as the 2012 NHL Draft’s No. 20 overall prospect by Red Line Report. The shortened campaign dropped him to No. 110 in those rankings, but he was still rated No. 71 by The Hockey News before the Pens picked him up with the 92nd selection.
Pens' Take: “He has NHL speed for sure … You can look down the road and think he can be a top penalty killer because of that speed and his tenacity. But he can shoot the puck too and he showed a willingness to drive to the net and get pucks on net.” – Tom Fitzgerald
Marcantuoni on his game plan for the development camp scrimmage: “Focusing on getting pucks to the net and being strong down low and using my speed to my advantage. I think I did that and we played well.”
