Birth Date: Aug. 15, 1994
How the Pens Acquired Him: Drafted in 2nd round (52nd overall) of 2012 NHL Draft
Next Step: Sophomore season at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Claim to Fame: The Latvian native played prep hockey at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minnesota. A long line of the school’s hockey alums include Zach Parise, Jonathan Toews, Jake Johnson, Kyle Okposo, Drew Stafford, Ryan Malone and a gentleman by the name of Sidney Crosby.

2012-13 Season: Staying in the Land of 10,000 Lakes for his freshman year of college, Blueger scored six goals and totaled 13 assists for the Minnesota State Mavericks, finishing tied for seventh on the team in points.

Numbers Never Lie: Blueger has scored a goal for Latvia in each of the last two World Junior Championships and led the team with 18 shots in last year’s tournament. He will be eligible to play in the 2014 World Juniors in Sweden.

Blueger on learning proper nutrition as he goes through college: “I think it’s really important, and it plays a significant role to be able to recover from practice to practice and game to game … but my favorite is probably going to Chipotle.”
