Summer Hockey School\/Goalie Camp

By Travis White

For most kids, once August rolls around, they cringe at the thought of school being right around the corner. Penguins Hockey Development has a school, however, that kids get excited about, and that is the Summer Hockey School.

The Summer Hockey School is designed to help players at all skill levels, and includes instruction in the mite, squirt, pee wee, bantam-midget age groups, to help prepare them for the upcoming season. The school, which is lead by two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque, focuses on three different area of hockey development: skills, power skating, and scrimmaging.

Marianne Watkins, who is the Penguins Skating Consultant, brings a strong skating instructional dimension to the camp, along with the other hockey skills taught by Phil and his staff of instructors. Watkins is the full-time instructor at RMU/Island Sports Center and is in demand for clinics and consultations across North America. She has worked with various players in the OHL, AHL, and NHL also.

Completing the impressive instructional talent within the camp, is head goaltending instructor and former NHL net-minder, Brent Johnson. Johnson, who has appeared in over 300 NHL games, now focuses in on the development of youth goaltenders in the Pittsburgh area.

In addition to the Summer Hockey School, Johnson will be the head instructor at the upcoming Penguins Hockey Development Goalie Camp. The camp, will be held at the Iceoplex at Southpointe, August 5th-9th, and will focus on preparing for the upcoming season. The camp is five days of high intensity instruction, with two and a half hours of on ice training each day, along with 45 minutes of daily off-ice work as well.

Johnson, leading a staff of highly qualified local instructors, will provide a student-to-instructor ratio that is quite low (4-1). The course of instruction will identify styles and techniques to enhance each individual’s game. Some of the on-ice skills that will be taught include: skating & mobility, rebound control, save selection, post-save recovery, depth, positioning, and reading/reacting to game situations. Goaltenders will also receive a follow up email including a report card and video review of their performance.

With both the Summer Hockey School and Goalie Camp providing an excellent way to get in the groove for the upcoming hockey season, kids may won’t have a problem with going to this kind of school.
