Penguins Sign Defenseman Nick D’Agostino

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Nick D’Agostino, to a two-year entry-level contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The deal begins with the 2013-14 season and runs through the 2014-15 campaign.

D’Agostino, 22, played collegiate hockey the past four seasons at Cornell University after originally being drafted by the Penguins in the seventh round (210th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft.

The 6-foot-2, 197-pound blueliner served as one of Cornell’s tri-captains as a senior this season, leading all team blueliners with six goals and tallying 17 points in 34 games for the Big Red. Following the season, D’Agostino received the Mark Weiss Memorial Award, which is presented to a senior with a career-long dedication and passion for the sport of hockey.

A native of Bolton, Ontario, D’Agostino had a banner season as a junior in ’11-12, earning All-Ivy League Second-Team and All-ECAC Second-Team honors while producing career highs in goals (8), points (12) and game-winning goals (5).

In four seasons at Cornell, D’Agostino totaled 72 points (25G-47A) in 132 career games. He earned a spot on the ECAC All-Rookie Team as a freshman in ’09-10.

Prior to joining Cornell, D’Agostino played two seasons with the St. Michael’s Buzzers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), where he was named that league’s top defenseman in 2009. D’Agostino was the Buzzers Rookie of the Year Award winner in ’07-08.
