Pens Prospect Wilson, Riverhawks Eliminated from Frozen Four

Penguins prospect Scott Wilson and the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks were eliminated from the Frozen Four by Yale in overtime, 3-2, Thursday at CONSOL Energy Center.

Yale jumped on the Redhawks in the first period, scoring two goals while outshooting Lowell 11-5. Lowell responded with two fast goals, the first assisted by Wilson, in the second to force a 2-2 tie that would carry through the end of regulation.

Seven minutes into the extra session Yale forward Andrew Miller skated up the ice and dragged the puck past defenseman Gregory Amlong to give himself a one-on-one situation with goalie Connor Hellebuyck. Miller deked to the left then tucked the puck through Hellebuyck’s five hole for the game-winning goal.

Wilson finished the game with one assist and a plus-one rating. Lowell was outshot 47-18.

“We usually try to have a good start, but tonight we didn’t have it,” Wilson said. “After those two goals (in the second), I really did think we were going to come out on top, but they were the better team tonight and I think they just kind of outworked us.”

While he and the Riverhawks were noticeably disappointed in not reaching Saturday’s championship game, Wilson said he would remember his Frozen Four experience – the first in school history – fondly.

“This is an unbelievable arena,” Wilson said. “Obviously, the Garden’s pretty cool too, but CONSOL is kind of next level. I thought the crowd was amazing. Just for Pittsburgh to hold this for us was pretty cool and it’s a first-class city and the arena is too. So it was definitely pretty cool for all of us.”
