The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Harrison Ruopp, to a three-year entry-level contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The deal begins with the 2013-14 season and runs through the 2015-16 campaign.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Ruopp recently completed his fourth season with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he established career highs for games played (65), assists (15), points (16), penalty minutes (132) and rating (+11). Ruopp was scoreless in four playoff games.

Ruopp, 20, was acquired by the Penguins in a 2012 draft-day deal from the Phoenix Coyotes along with a 2012 third-round draft pick (Oskar Sundqvist) in exchange for Zbynek Michalek. Ruopp was originally drafted by the Coyotes in the second round (84th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft.

A native of Zehner, Saskatchewan, Ruopp played in 214 career regular-season games for Prince Albert, amassing 34 points (3G-31A) and 395 penalty minutes. Ruopp also appeared in 10 career postseason contests for the Raiders.
