The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Douglas Murray from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2013 second-round draft pick and a 2014 conditional second-round draft pick, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Murray has spent his entire eight-year career with San Jose. This season he has collected three assists and 26 penalty minutes while averaging 17:08 minutes in 29 games for the Sharks.

Murray, 33, was leading San Jose with 64 blocked shots this season. His 56 hits were the most among team defensemen. Murray was also averaging 2:53 shorthanded minutes per game, the second-highest total on the team.

Murray, who hails from Bromma, Sweden, has played 451 career regular-season games for San Jose, notching six goals, 53 assists, 59 points and a plus-32 rating. His best season came in 2009-10 when he established career highs in games played (79), goals (4), assists (14) and points (17).

Murray, who was originally drafted by the Sharks in the eighth round (241st overall) of the 1999 NHL Draft, has appeared in 57 career playoff games with San Jose, tallying 10 points (2G-8A).

Murray has previously represented Team Sweden at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the 2008 World Championships. Before joining the Sharks, he played four seasons of college hockey at Cornell between 1999-2003.
