TRAINING CAMP (DAY 2)

Relive the second day of training camp with this PensTV video...

NEAL KEY TO NEW-LOOK POWER PLAY
Neal, who led the NHL with 18 power-play goals, moved from an upfront position to a roving-type of role on the back end. He’ll line up at the point, but Neal will have some range to freelance and attack the net if an opportunity presents itself.

... Neal, who is a left-handed shot, seems a perfect fit for the rover position. And with the way he can shoot the puck, he may lead the NHL for the second season in a row in power-play goals.

“(Neal) is going to shoot,” Crosby said. “‘Geno’ and I will look to feed him and then if not, we’ve got to be ready around the net to put in rebounds and create things down low.”

QUOTE(S) OF THE DAY

COACHSPEAK
Head coach Dan Bylsma covered a few topics following practice...

  • Everyone is healthy after the first two days of camp
  • Malkin had a long day of travel Sunday, with the time change, lack of sleep and long practice, he's pretty tired
  • Different players will play alongside Malkin and Neal depending on game situations. Still possible for someone to earn that wing slot
  • It's possible that Despres, if he makes the team, could be paired with Letang

POWER PLAY UNIT
The Pens worked on special teams in the second session of Monday's camp practice.

For the top power-play unit, Pittsburgh used Letang and Neal on the point with Kunitz, Crosby and Malkin down low.
Second unit has Niskanen and Martin up top with Kennedy, Sutter and Dupuis up front.

START THE DAY
The Pens host Day 2 of training camp at CONSOL Energy Center with a noon practice that is open and free to the public (doors open at 11:30 a.m.). All 26 players on the camp roster are expected to participate, including the reigning NHL MVP and scoring champion. Evgeni Malkin arrived in Pittsburgh late Sunday and rejoined his teammates earlier this morning. The boys of winter are all back together. Can we just drop the puck already?
