Two NHL rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, are teaming up to form a youth hockey team that will play in the 2013 Brick International Super Novice Tournament in Edmonton.

“Team Pennsylvania” will feature the top 10-year-old players in the state and will compete against teams from Canada and the U.S. at the West Edmonton Mall July 1-7. The tournament is for youth hockey’s super novice division – players born in 2003.

One of the coaches will be former NHL star Mark Recchi, who played for both the Penguins and Flyers.

“This is a unique opportunity for the Penguins to work with the Flyers and give some of the best young hockey players in Pennsylvania the chance to compete in an elite international tournament,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Penguins. “Three of the top-ranked teams in the nation in that age group are the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, the Valley Forge Minutemen and Team Comcast. That tells you a lot about the quality of the youth hockey programs in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. We look forward to seeing the kids from our state display their skills at this prestigious amateur hockey event.”

“The state of Pennsylvania, particularly the Philadelphia region, has become a hotbed for incredibly talented hockey players,” said Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko. “We are excited to be working with the Penguins to have the Keystone State properly represented at the upcoming Brick Tournament in Edmonton. We hope to showcase some of our region’s aspiring players to the youth hockey world.”

The tryout process for Team Pennsylvania will start in January with two regional teams – the Penguins Selects and the Flyers Selects. The final roster for Team Pennsylvania will be selected in late May.
