A little rain couldn’t deter the staff, which included assistant coach Tony Granato, from assembling the second multi-sport dek facility at Lewis Park in Hazelwood, as part of Project Power Play.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County teamed up to build 12 rinks in a three-year span as part of Project Power Play. The aspirations of the project is to introduce kids to the game at the grass roots level and giving them a free venue to play while keeping them active and having fun.

Head coach Dan Bylsma and Penguins staff built the first dek rink at Banksville Park in September. The official ribbon cutting for that facility was Nov. 20.

Project Power Play is a $2.1 million project with Highmark leading the effort with $1.5 million. The Penguins Foundation is contributing $600,000, while the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County are proving land and maintenance services, lighting and other support.
