More than 100 enthusiastic skaters from the Hill District and surrounding communities took part in a free Community Skate hosted by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, Oct. 20 at CONSOL Energy Center.

Free skate rental was provided by the Penguins, RMU’s Island Sports Center, Ice Connection of Pittsburgh and other local rinks. The skaters pre-registered at the Thelma Lovette YMCA in the Hill District.

RMU’s Island Sports Center provided instructors for first-time skaters, while Penguins staffers Rich Hixon, Michael Chiasson, Max Malone and Mark Shuttleworth also were on the ice to assist.

Howard Smith, coach of Pittsburgh ICE (Inclusion Creates Equality), the inner city ice hockey program supported by the Penguins, also was on the ice interacting with parents and kids – likely acquiring new recruits for Pittsburgh ICE.

“My colleagues and I are so inspired when it comes to community events such as this – community outreach is one of our core values and it starts at the top of our organization” said Kimberly Slater-Wood, Pittsburgh Penguins director of outreach. “Our goal is to be good neighbors and to be active and engaged in the community. The smile on the faces of the kids and adults will have a long-lasting effect and evidences our commitment to the community.”
