WBS Penguins Unable to Hold Off Senators
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins could not stave off a third-period rally by the Binghamton Senators, who skated to a 2-1 win at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
In what was the season opener for both teams, the Penguins held a 1-0 lead coming out of the second intermission. Senators rookie Jakob Silfverberg evened the score 4:34 into the third, gathering the rebound off of a Jared Cowen shot and banging it home.
Less than three minutes later, Hugh Jessiman notched the game-winner when he reached back to pick up a loose puck in the slot and rifled it over the shoulder of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton netminder Jeff Zatkoff.
The Penguins controlled the offensive momentum for much of the first period, outshooting the Senators 17-9, but goalie Robin Lehner stood tall to keep the score, 0-0
The scoreless tie was broken at 13:08 of the second period as Trevor Smith knocked down a clearing attempt at the Binghamton blueline and raced in alone before firing a low wrister past the right skate of Lehner.
Appearing in his first game for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Zatkoff suffered the loss with 21 saves on 23 shots. Lehner stopped 35-of-36 for Binghamton.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton next takes the ice on Oct. 19 versus the Springfield Falcons at 7:05 p.m. The Penguins will open up their home schedule on Oct. 20 at 7:05 p.m. against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
