2012 Adult Hockey Skills Clinic

By Kira Tull

The Pittsburgh Penguins held hosted an Adult Hockey Skills Clinic September 27-28, at CONSOL Energy Center. The Penguins Hockey School invited adults, with a wide range of hockey skills, to be instructed by Penguins’ legends Bryan Trottier, Phil Bourque and Troy Loney.

Both nights kicked off with hockey talks, which included many interesting stories from the retired NHL players, as well as insight into the game of hockey. Phil Bourque and Bryan Trottier took the lead on Thursday, while Troy Loney and Trottier coached the following night.

All goaltenders who participated in the clinic were invited to take the ice early for goalie-focused instruction, led by Pittsburgh Penguins Manager of Youth Hockey Programs, Michael Chiasson.

After the hockey talks, all participants took to the ice for a skills session organized by the alumni coaches. Both nights, the skills practice consisted of five stations which focused on basic hockey skills such as passing, shooting, stick handling, cross-overs, backward skating, and starts and stops. The skills portion concluded with offensive and defensive drills. Each drill led to skill development that was able to be executed in a full-ice, 60-minute scrimmage at the end of each session.

The program’s two-day format allowed participants to learn multiple skills in a practice setting. In addition, they were given an opportunity to spend time with the hockey legends instructing them, as well as gain one-on-one assistance by the instructors.

With more than 40 players in attendance, the clinic proved to be a success with many great experiences and hockey knowledge shared and remembered.
