12:31 PM:
Lighthearted moment happened during the non-rostered players' skate a few moments ago.

Goalie Jeff Zatkoff was deep in his net when the cage actually got tipped over by a teammate and trapped him beneath. It was a bit of a struggle for him to emerge back out, but he eventually did and practice went on as normal. Stick taps to Reid McNeill and Riley Holzapfel for rushing to their goalie's aid!!

12:15 PM:
For a lot of the WBS Pens, Friday’s preseason contest against Rochester will be their first game action in a long time, and they can’t wait for the puck to drop.

“I’m excited,” defenseman Simon Despres said. “It’s been a few months since I’ve been in a real game. I can’t wait. I’m pretty nervous for this game. I want to get that first shift out of the way, get my first body check in and get into the game as fast as possible.”

“It’ll be exciting getting the first game in after a long summer,” forward Trevor Smith said. “I’ve been waiting a while to get back into it and get ready for the season.”

The game will be especially important to Smith, who signed this summer as a free agent with the Penguins, because it will be his first showcase for his new employer.

“It’s a new organization here, a new start for me,” he said. “There’s a little bit of nerves, but that will all calm down once the puck drops. I’ve been through it before. It’s just preseason to get all the little things out and get prepared, get the system down.”

Smith skated on a line with Benn Ferriero and Beau Bennett at the morning skate. The grouping has worked together in training camp and Smith likes the line’s potential.

“I think the line works pretty well,” Smith said. “We’ve got a lot of speed on both sides, and a lot of skill with Bennett and Ferriero has got a great shot. I think we’ll work well together. We just have to talk a lot and keep the puck moving.”

And the Pens are also hoping to have a good first showing for their home fans in the first home preseason game.

“I’m happy to play in front of our home fans in Wilkes-Barre,” Despres said. “It should be a good game, a good crowd and a lot of fun to play in.”

“I think we want to show the home fans what we’ve got this year,” Smith said. “The team has changed a little bit. We want to show them what we can do and what to expect.”
