Penguins Report: WBS Camp Day 2

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins descended upon the Coal Street Complex in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. for the start of training camp.

The players (camp roster here) arrived Thursday evening for a team meeting and medical testing. They hit the ice for the first time Friday to lay the building blocks for a Calder Cup run.

Follow the Penguins Report throughout the day for updates on the opening of camp.

8:00 PM:

There have been some familiar faces around the WBS Pens training camp. A few members of Pittsburgh's staff have made the trip to northeastern Pennsylvania to lend a hand.

Pittsburgh’s strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar, head equipment manager Dana Heinze and video coordinator Andy Saucier are also in town to assist their organizational counterparts in any way they can as the AHL goes about business as usual.

“You anticipate hockey for a long time in the summertime, getting ready for the season,” Bylsma said. “A chance to get on the ice, see these guys on the ice, work with players in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization – I get excited about that opportunity. I get excited about getting on the ice and I get excited about being a part of coaching our players.”

2:00 PM:
As they did Friday, the WBS Penguins split the roster into two practice squads (A and B). Each squad was on the ice for roughly an hour and 15 minutes. The two groups were the same as from Day 1 of training camp.

The first group consisted of forwards Eric Tangradi, Trevor Smith, Beau Bennett, Brian Gibbons, Warren Peters, Paul Thompson, Tom Kuhnhackl, Denver Manderson, Adam Payerl and Keven Veilleux, defensemen Simon Despres, Dylan Reese, Brian Strait, Philip Samuelsson, Joey Mormina and Alex Grant and goalies Brad Thiessen and Patrick Killeen.

The second group featured Philippe Dupuis, Jayson Megna, Benn Ferriero, Dominik Uher, Zach Sill, Riley Holzapfel, Michael Neal, Cody Chupp and Scott Zurevinski, defensemen Joe Morrow, Robert Bortuzzo, Brian Dumoulin, Carl Sneep and Reid McNeill and goaltenders Jeff Zatkoff and Killeen (he pulled double duty again).

I still can’t get over how incredibly gorgeous the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins practice facility is. The Ice Rink at Coal Street is truly a top-rate building and has to be the nicest facility in the American Hockey League.

The team was gracious enough to give us a tour. Here is a peek the WBS front office, practice rink and locker room.
