Pens Host 25th Annual Summer Sticks

Summer is turning into fall, but the sun held up for one beautiful afternoon of golf Thursday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the 25th Annual Summer Sticks Golf Classic at Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley, and the event couldn’t have happened on a better day.

“I don’t know if you could paint a better fall day on this course,” Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said. “It’s looking beautiful. It’s a gorgeous day. We’re hoping to hit them straight today.”

Bylsma was joined by his coaching staff and other members of the Penguins front office for the annual event, which features a scramble-style tournament that benefits local youth programs supported by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

“The people that come and pay to play golf and support the Penguins Foundation are the true lovers and supporters of Pittsburgh Penguins hockey,” said ROOT Sports play-by-play announcer Paul Steigerwald. “They’re here every year and you can count on them no matter what. I know I speak for the organization when I say they appreciate it very much.”

“It’s a great event for the Penguins Foundation,” said Bylsma, who celebrated his 42nd birthday Wednesday. “Getting out here it signifies the turning of summer into fall. To come back out here and see some familiar faces from our community and the Penguins family makes it a great day to be here.”

The event had a shotgun start at noon. The event culminates with a dinner and prizes given to winners of the tournament.

“It’s always good to get out and play golf,” Bill Guerin said. “You play for a great charity, it makes it even better. The weather makes it even better. We’re just out playing for charity and having a good time.”

“You cannot have a more beautiful day for anything, never mind golf, especially here at this beautiful country club,” Steigerwald said. “It’s a great time for everybody. It warms my heart when I see the great supporters of Penguins hockey who are here and enjoying the opportunity to rub elbows with members of the Penguins family.”
