Local Trio Invited to Team USA Junior Evaluation Camp
USA Hockey announced today that a trio of Pittsburgh area natives selected in the 2011 NHL Draft – forwards J.T. Miller and Vince Trocheck, and goaltender John Gibson – were among 46 players invited to the National Junior Evaluation Camp to be held August 4-11 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
The players will be auditioning for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team that will take part in the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, Dec. 26, 2012-Jan. 5, 2013, in Ufa, Russia.
All three players participated in the junior evaluation camp last August. Miller, Gibson and defenseman Jacob Trouba were the only players invited to this year’s camp who played for Team USA at the 2012 World Junior Championship earlier this year in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.
Miller posted four points (2G-2A) and a plus-3 rating in six games at the WJC, while Gibson stopped 23 of 27 shots in his only start.
Miller, 19, became the highest-drafted player from Pittsburgh when the New York Rangers made him the 15th-overall selection in the 2011 NHL Draft. In his first year with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League, Miller finished fifth on the team with 62 points (25G-37A) in 61 games during the regular season, before adding 10 points (2G-8A) in 13 postseason contests.
Trocheck, 18, led the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL and finished ninth (tied) in the league with 85 points (29G-56A) in 65 regular-season games. He added 11 points (6G-5A) in 12 postseason games. Trocheck was selected by the Florida Panthers in the third round (64th overall) of last year’s draft.
Gibson, 18, was the second goaltender chosen in the 2011 NHL Draft when the Anaheim Ducks took him with the 39th-overall pick in the second round. Gibson appeared in 32 games this year with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL, winning 28 games and posting a .928 save percentage. He went 8-6 with a .938 save percentage in 16 playoff games.
All three players will be making appearances at the Penguins’ youth scrimmage camp at Ice Castle this week – Gibson on Tuesday, and Miller and Trocheck on Thursday.
