Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation & UPMC Sports Medicine Expand Free Baseline Concussion Testing to All Youth Athletes
The Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine are expanding their free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes in all sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only.
On a first-come, first-served basis, an expanded schedule of testing for athletes ages 10 to 14 will be available June 18 through Aug. 3 at four Community College of Allegheny County locations –Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also is available at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side.
Registration is limited, but up to 6,000 athletes will be tested. Up to 40 athletes can be tested at the same time at each site. Registration is available at www.upmc.com/BaselineTesting.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine started testing youth hockey players in May and will continue that testing program through August as well.
“Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.”
While athletes are being tested, their parents will meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “Heads UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program will supervise the program and testing. The entire process takes about one hour. Participants will receive a copy of the baseline results through a secure email system within two weeks following the test.
Participants must be at least 10 years old on the day of testing and must not have had a concussion within 30 days of the test.
