While defenseman Griffin Reinhart doesn’t resemble his father and former NHL defenseman Paul Reinhart in terms of size (Griffin is 6-foot-4 compared to his father’s 5-foot-11 frame), the younger Reinhart does display a similar offensive-minded style that helped make his father a success in the NHL. This past season, the towering defenseman was sensational for the Edmonton Oil Kings, leading their defensemen with 12 goals while also guiding them to a first place finish and a 38-point improvement from the previous year. During the Oil Kings championship run through the Western Hockey League playoffs, Griffin continued to lead the way and establish himself as a top defensive presence, finishing with a team-high plus-14 rating. The two-way defenseman showcased his ability to distribute the puck, tallying a career-high 24 assists, while developing into a power-play threat from the point (5G-12A-17P). Reinhart also provided Team Canada great defensive depth as he helped them go on to win gold at the Ivan Hlinka tournament.

“A surprisingly adept offensive player, Reinhart’s vision and a deceptively accurate outlet pass, coupled with his heavy and accurate slap shot makes him an offensive catalyst. … His unmatched combination of size, offensive awareness, defensive-zone coverage and healthy bloodlines makes him among the best and one of the safer picks of defensemen available in this year’s draft class.”
-McKeen’s Hockey

He collected 25 points (6G-19A-25P) in 45 games during his first year with the team (2010-11).

He is the son of former NHL defenseman, Paul Reinhart, who played 648 games with the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames. His older brother, Max, was drafted 64th overall in 2010 by Calgary and his younger brother, Sam, the 2011-12 WHL Rookie of the Year, is draft-eligible in 2014. Both Sam and Max play for the Kootenay Ice (WHL).

An old broadcast of a Flames-Oilers game from the 1988 Stanley Cup Playoffs showed Reinhart that he and his father have a very similar style of play – “I had never seen him play until then and, just seeing a glimpse of him, it’s pretty amazing how much we play alike.”

A member of Team Pacific at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, Reinhart recorded seven points (1G-6A-7P) in six games to capture the bronze medal. Fellow 2012 prospects Mathew Dumba and Morgan Rielly were his teammates at the tournament.

Reinhart joined the Vancouver Northwest Giants in 2009-10 and captured a B.C. Major Midget League Championship. He first played midget at age 14, leading the Hollyburn Huskies to a provincial title in 2008-09 by scoring 18 points in six playoff games.
