PENS 5, BRUINS 3
0:00: The final horn sounds and the Pens win this one in Beantown, 5-3.
1:15: The Bruins call Turco to the bench and get a sixth skater on the ice.
4:33: Vitale takes a puck to the face off a big shot from Chara. Vitale falls to the ice immediately in noticable pain. You never want to see that. Hopefully, he'll be OK.
Vitale heads to the locker room.
|"I hope Joey v is ok, that looks like it seriously hurts. #Pens"
7:26: Pens kill off the penalty. Time winding down on the Bruins.
7:46: Johnson makes a nice save on Chara's bomb from the point. Lucic pushes the goalie looking for a rebound. Letang jumps to his netminder's defense and engages Lucic.
9:38: Crosby finds a floating puck and cracks it over the glass in the defensive zone baseball style. He'll sit for delay of game. The Bruins with a chance to really make this one a game. Pens PK with a big test.
11:56: The Bruins finally connect on a rush play. Lucic gets a step around Letang and goes across the ice to Peverley, who lifts the puck past Johnson. PENS 5, BRUINS 3
13:10: Boychuk is down on the ice after colliding with Asham. It appears to be an accidental knee-on-knee. Boychuk leaves the ice and heads to the locker room.
13:45: Asham stands in front of the net and keeps his stick on the ice. He take a cross check in the back but stays strong enough to get his stick on the puck to re-direct the pass into the top corner of the goal. PENS 5, BRUINS 2
|"I'm really diggin' Arron Asham. He really plays with heart. #Pens"
18:43: Seguin gets behind the Pens defense for a breakaway. His shot sails over the net. That's the second time Seguin hasn't connected on a golden opportunity. Seguin will be replaying these chances in his head later.
20:00: Puck drops. Game on. Third period underway. Pens are 20 minutes from paydirt. Here we go...
The intensity and dislike between these two teams heated up during the second period. The game also opened up quite a bit as each team traded rushes for and against. The turning point came when Johnson made a righteous glove save on Seguin on a 2-on-0. The Pens' power play broke the tie game late in the frame with two scores. And that is the difference in the game.
0:00: The horn signifies that the second period concludes. Pittsburgh will carry a 4-2 lead into the final frame thanks to some late, clutch power-play scoring.
1:01: Pretty passes + Penguins talent = another power-play goal. Crosby is the final recipient of some tic-tac-toe passing. Letang goes across the heart of the slot and Crosby nets the easy goal with Turco out of position. PENS 4, BRUINS 2
1:33: Neal and the Bruins are not too fond of each other. All game the Bruins and Neal have gone after each other with severe physicality. It finally boils over as Ference drops the gloves with Neal behind the Boston goal.
1:49: Neal buries his NHL-best 18th PP goal of the year and hits No. 40 on the season. Crosby tries to feed Kunitz in the slot, but he misses the shot. The rubber drifts to Neal, who snaps it past Turco for the man-advantage tally. PENS 3, BRUINS 2
|"The Real Deal is now at 40 goals!!!! A beauty, a true beauty. Nothing else to say #Pens"
2:31: Peverley high sticks Letang up high and he'll take a seat as well. Pens working a 5-on-3.
2:44: Niskanen goes down hard in the corner after Paille runs over him in the corner. Niskanen is shaken up and heads to the dressing room. Paille is charged with a charge and the Pens will go on the power play.
7:42: Both teams are having issues with puck management. Lots of back-and-forth action, but neither side is getting shots as they both are turning the puck over on the rushes.
(The pianist just played MGMT's "Kids." Gold).
10:00: By the way, the pianist at TD Garden is brilliant. In the last stoppage he was playing Pitbull's "International Love." Last time I was at the Garden, he played Nirvana's "Lithium." That dude's got talent.
14:06: The Pens are really playing the body in this game. Just 25 minutes into the game and Pittsburgh has 22 hits already - led by Staal's four.
18:53: The Bruins collect a turnover at the Pens blue line for the usual 2-on-0. Marchand feeds the puck to Seguin, but Johnson comes sliding across to get his glove on the puck to make the save.
19:42: It takes all of 18 seconds for the Bruins to even this game. Lucic keeps a clearing attempt in the zone and gets the puck on net. Lucic crashes the net undetected. Krejci draws Johnson out of the net and pushes it cross-crease to Lucic for the alley oop. PENS 2, BRUINS 2
20:00: Puck drops. Game on. Second period underway. Let's see if Chris Boagey nails his prediction below.
|"A couple of points for Geno coming in the second! I can feel it! #PensMobile #Pens"
The Bruins were counter attacking hard and generated some quality scoring chances off the rush. The Pens were able to disrupt those rushes with getting their sticks in the passing lanes and blocking a few shots. When pucks did get through, Johnson was able to make the save. How the Pens handle that counter will be interesting to watch as the game unfolds.
Meanwhile, Dupuis continues his career year with an assist to increase his NHL-best scoring streak to 15 games. He's totaled 20 points during that run (9G-11A).
0:00: Horn sounds, period ends. After 20 minutes the Pens hold a 2-1 lead on goals from Crosby and Martin. Letang with two assists.
3:03: Pouliot carries the puck down the center lane and lifts a backhander over the shoulder of Johnson in tight for his 15th of the year. PENS 2, BRUINS 1
4:15: Orpik turns the puck over in his own zone and Rolston gets a chance from the side of the cage. Johnson bails out his teammate with a save. No dice Bruins.
5:02: The Pens score again off the rush!! Martin starts the play into the offensive zone and then gets a pass off pads (blocker to be exact) as he drives to the net. Martin lifts the puck off the crossbar and over the goal line. A review is underway, but this one will count.
The refs make it Facebook official. Good goal. Martin gets pounds on the bench. Great joy. PENS 2, BRUINS 0
8:50: Johnson makes a huge save on Seguin on a semi-breakaway. Johnson challenges the shot and gets his pad on the puck. Say hey Johnny boy, the battle call.
|"I get the chills whenever Sidney Crosby puts that puck in the net! #pens"
9:50: With that assist, Dupuis extends his NHL season-best scoring streak to 15 games (9G-11A). Over the last two seasons, only teammate Crosby (25 games) has posted a longer scoring streak among NHL players. With the assist, Dupuis ties teammate Evgeni Malkin (15 games; Jan. 16-Mar. 4, 2010) for the fifth-longest streak in the NHL over the last three years.
12:19: The Pens counterattacked with a good rush from their own zone. Dupuis finds Crosby at the side of the cage and Crosby buries the shot. PENS 1, BRUINS 0
12:40: Lucic and Neal both take penalties. We'll skate 4-on-4.
|"#pens nice save Johnson"
14:30: Johnson passes his first big test of the night with a big-time pad save.
17:07: The penalty expires. A turnover in the Pens zone leads to a quality shot by the Bruins from the high slot, but is blocked by Pittsburgh.
19:31: Krejci goes to the box for delay of game and the Pens get an early power play. Pittsburgh using Letang, Malkin, Crosby, Neal and Kunitz to start the man-advantage.
20:00: Puck drops. Game on. First period underway. Here we go.
No big changes for the Pens lineup in tonight's game.
Johnson in the cage.
Before we turn our full attention to tonight's game, let's step back for a hot minute and talk about something a little more off key. Plum High School filmed their 3rd annual Pens-themed lip dub video. Check it out below (Video 1 here, Video 2 here). For the story on how all this began click here.
By the way, PensTV was there for when the whole thing went down. Here's their look behind the scenes.
It's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! Tonight the Pens will battle the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in Beantown.
It will be a battle between the backup goaltenders as Brent Johnson goes for the Pens and Marty Turco gets the call for the Bruins. For all the morning skate details, including lines combos and pics, check out Michelle's Pens Report.
Since we are playing Boston, I feel it is my duty to play the Dropkick Murphys. And since Johnson is starting for the Pens, there is no better song to open tonight's blog than "Boys on the Docks." After all, the opening line of the song/chorus is "Say hey Johnny boy, the battle call."
