The power and strength girls have when they step out onto the ice is electric. They are tough, fast, and are not afraid to break a nail. Their hair is pulled back and ready to fight hard to the bitter end - nothing will stand in their way.

Four of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Girls Tier I and Tier II teams proved they have what it takes. They battled to the finish line at the Mid-American District tournament, earning trips to the national tournament. With winners from each division, the Elite Girls are heading to the 2012 USA Hockey National Championships and representing Western Pennsylvania on a national stage. It is no doubt that the four Penguins Elite Girls teams fought hard to earn top spots.

For Tier I, the Penguins Elite Girls U12, U14, and U19 teams will be competing at Nationals in Marlborough, MA this weekend.

Carrying on with the amazing accomplishments of Western Pennsylvania’s girls hockey, the Penguins Elite Girls Tier II U19 team – the Steel City Selects - also won their District title and are advancing to Nationals this weekend in Dallas, TX.

According to the @PensEliteGirls Twitter account, the teams have already hit the road and are in the process of traveling to their expected and highly anticipated destinations.

Since all the teams went undefeated at the Mid-American Districts, their sights are now set on capturing four 2012 National Championship titles and bringing them back home to Pittsburgh, PA.

Kathy Pippy, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Girls coach, reflects on the success her teams have had, “Thanks to the support of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Pittsburgh Elite Girls Hockey program is allowing girls to follow their dreams to play in college and beyond.” She also tweets, “Very few programs have 3 Tier 1 teams at Nationals. #accomplishment #PPE #pride”
