The Pittsburgh Penguins continue their efforts to assist high school seniors in the Western Pennsylvania area continue their education through their scholarship programs. Each year, the Penguins sponsor the Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship, the Penguins Alumni Association Scholarship, and three Inner-City Scholarships which are now available on the team’s website. Any student interested in participating in the scholarship program must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better in order to qualify for the scholarships.
Beginning in 1992, the Penguins and the Penguins Booster Club co-sponsor the Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship, in honor of the Penguins’ late head coach, Bob Johnson, who led the team to their first Stanley Cup in 1991. Throughout his career, Coach Johnson helped thousands of high school, college, and professional athletes become better people and education was a cornerstone of his philosophy. This annual $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a Western Pennsylvania high school senior who has provided academic excellence, community service, leadership, sportsmanship and a positive attitude as a member of their high school hockey team. Apply for the Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship.
In 2005, the Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association created a $2,000 scholarship for a Western Pennsylvania high school senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, good citizenship, school and community involvement, and an intense love for the game of hockey. The student should also showcase an on-ice hustle created by achievement beyond his/her talent level. Apply for the Alumni Association Scholarship.
In conjunction with the Pittsburgh Public Schools, the Pittsburgh Penguins award three Inner-City Scholarships each year, valued at $1,500, to inner-city high school seniors who have demonstrated academic achievement, community service, and participation in school activities. All applications must be postmarked by April 20, 2012 and the Penguins ask all students to review the criteria and nomination forms closely before applying for the scholarships.
