Workers began erecting scaffolding Friday morning around the site where the statue will be placed. It is in the plaza in front of the Trib Total Media gate, along Centre Avenue.
The March 7 event will be open to the public free of charge. Part of Centre Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic following rush hour that morning, so that fans may gather to watch the unveiling ceremony. The Penguins also will provide a big screen to show highlights.
The statue, called ‘Le Magnifique,” was funded privately by the Penguins’ ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community.
The Penguins hosts the Toronto Maple Leafs that night at 7:30 p.m. at CONSOL Energy Center. The game will be televised nationally by NBC Sports Network in the U.S. and by TSN in Canada.
