Senior Night Spoilers

By Tyler Urda

It was senior night for Bishop Canevin Thursday as they took on Class AA leading West Allegheny. It was a packed house, including large student sections from both schools which made the atmosphere similar to a playoff game.

The First period was all West Allegheny, as Joshua Linsenbigler scored the first goal for West A at 10:23. West Allegheny had several other scoring chances during the period, but Bishop Canevin goalie Nikita Meskin turned them away. Both teams were 0 for 1 on the power play.

West Allegheny continued their dominance into the second period off two goals from Patrick Coburn and a power play goal from Jonathan Levitt . West Allegheny’s penalty kill was also outstanding as they killed four Bishop Canevin power plays.

Heading into the third period, it looked as though West A had all the momentum and a firm hold on the game with a three goal lead and class AA leading goalie Jason Kumpfmiller behind them. But Bishop Canevin came out and scored a key goal early by Augustin Peponidis which put a question mark as to the end of the game.

Then the Crusaders scored a fluky goal off the stick of Chadd Lounder . Bishop Canevin had all the momentum at this point, but like all great goalies Jason Kumpfmiller put the two goals behind him and played well the rest of the game.

“I told them to keep their heads up and the seniors on the bench kept everyone in it,” said West Allegheny Head Coach Tim Veach. West A did just that holding onto the game, stepping up and getting the 3-2 win.

Bishop Canevin goalie Nikita Meskin stopped 18 shots and Jason Kumpfmiller made 23 saves. “He’s been outstanding, he was the backbone of our team last season and he’s continued that this year.” “The guys play really hard around him and he has the most important position on the ice,” said West A Head Coach Tom Veach about goalie Jason Kumpfmiller.

Maybe the most important factor in the game was West Allegheny’s PK unit, killing off all nine of Bishop Canevin’s power play chances..
