Asham Hopes to Return this Weekend

Penguins forward Arron Asham said that he’s “feeling good” and is hoping to return to the lineup this weekend for Pittsburgh’s back-to-back contests in Philadelphia Saturday and Buffalo Sunday.

"Head-wise and confidence-wise I feel good," said Asham, who skated with his teammates in practice for the first time Tuesday. "It's a matter of getting my legs under me. I'll get a couple of good skates here this week and hopefully be ready for the weekend.

“I’m practicing and taking little steps from there. I’m planning on being ready for the weekend. It’s just a matter of the coaches feel confident enough to have me in or if I can crack the lineup. The team’s playing pretty good right now. I have to get my hands and timing back, getting ready for the weekend.”

Asham suffered the concussion from an elbow he absorbed Jan. 11 at Washington. He played two games with it before missing the team’s next 12 contests.

Asham had been skating on his own with other injured players, but he joined his teammates for the first time Tuesday. It was a no-contact session for Asham, but contact is expect to be used Wednesday.

“We’re going to work on contact (Wednesday) and (Thursday),” Asham said. “This was just getting in there with the guys and moving around. We’ll do baby steps. A little more contact (Wednesday).”

Asham said that he will not change his style of play despite the concussion, that includes being physical and fighting when he must.

“I had to (fight) to get in the league and I’ll do it to stay in the league,” he said. “It’s a part of the game and part of my job. I’m not worried about it. I haven’t gotten a concussion from a fight. Good defense.”

Asham also suffered a concussion last season. His experience coming back from that has helped in his work this year.

“Last year was my first one and I was laying at home not knowing what was going on,” he said. “This one I knew what to expect and I’m feeling good now. I’m ready to play my game and play the way I can.”
