Malkin finished January with 12 goals, four assists, 16 points and a plus-5 rating in 12 games. His 12 goals during the month led all NHL players, while his 16 points ranked second (tied) behind the New York Islanders John Tavares (22 points). Malkin tallied at least one point in nine of 12 contests last month, including a five-point night (3G-2A) on Jan. 15 at Tampa Bay.
The NHL’s leading scorer with 59 points (27G-32A) through 43 games, Malkin closed the month strong in last night’s 5-4 come-from-behind defeat of the Toronto Maple Leafs at CONSOL Energy Center. Malkin scored the game-tying goal with just seven seconds remaining in regulation, then added the game-deciding shootout tally.
Malkin’s goal-scoring binge in January included a career-high-tying six-game goal scoring streak from Jan. 13-22 (9 goals total), his longest such streak since scoring in his first six NHL games between Oct. 18-Nov. 1, 2006.
One of the key figures during Pittsburgh’s current season-high eight-game winning streak, Malkin led the NHL in January with four game-winning goals. Malkin also finished the month a perfect 4-for-4 during shootouts with a pair of game-deciding tallies. For the season, he ranks second in the league in both game-winning (7) and game-deciding shootout goals (3, tied).
In addition to leading the NHL in points, the 2009 Art Ross Trophy winner also has a league-best 1.37 point-per-game average. Malkin places among the top 10 in several other major NHL statistical categories including: goals (27, T-2nd); assists (32, T-7th); shots (206, 2nd); even-strength goals (22, 2nd); power-play points (18, T-10th); and power-play assists (13, T-10th).
Malkin has won three previous weekly NHL honors this season – ‘First Star’ for the week ending Jan. 22; ‘Third Star’ for the week ending Jan. 15; and ‘Third Star’ for the week ending Dec. 18.
