Mid-Season Vaca
While Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, and Kris Letang represented the Penguins at the 2012 All-Star weekend from Jan. 26-29 in Ottawa, the rest of the team had a five-day vacation.

The first instinct would be to go somewhere warm- and many of the Pens did just that.

“Vitamin D’s a good thing,” Matt Cooke said. “I went to Jamaica. Just being with the kids and the family on the beach is unbelievable.”

Dustin Jeffrey and his girlfriend also went to Jamaica. “We did some cool stuff, “ he said. “We swam with dolphins. We got to hold and play with stingrays.”

Deryk Engelland found the sun in Las Vegas, where he and his wife just purchased a house.  He spent the time off picking out paint colors and house furnishings.

“We did a few things,” Engelland said, “But we’ll do a lot more when we get back in the summer.”

Ben Lovejoy poked fun at himself for staying in Pittsburgh while his teammates who were enjoying daily applications of sunscreen on the beach.

“I got a nice suntan,” he laughed. “Did some tanning outside my building.”

Lovejoy joined his wife, who is a third grade teacher, and read her students the book Teammates. “(I) got through most of the book pretty easily, but it was difficult.”

Tyler Kennedy also decided to forgo the sun and surf to go back to his hometown Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

“I went ice fishing back home,” Kennedy said. “I like to fish and especially with my family, it’s a big tradition of everyone going fishing. We just try to get as many family members on the lake and throw some lines down.”

They didn’t catch anything, but that doesn’t matter to Kennedy and his family.

“We were more there to have a good time.”
