Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was on the ice at CONSOL Energy Center for a pre-practice skate Monday.

Crosby skated with injured teammates Simon Despres and Jordan Staal and strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar for about 45 minutes.

Crosby, who has been out of the lineup since Dec. 5, was diagnosed by Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, with a neck injury and concussion. Dr. Bray reported the neck is fully healed. Those findings will be evaluated by independent specialists over the next few days (full details here).

Crosby, 24, missed 61 games after suffering a concussion in January 2011. He returned to the ice Nov. 21 and posted 12 points (2G-10A) in eight contests before suffering the recent concussion-like symptoms. Crosby has missed the Pens' past 21 games.

Crosby skated Jan. 13 in Florida for the first time following the Dec. 5 injury. He has been skating on his own since then.

Staal (11 games missed) and Despres (9) have been out of the lineup with knee injuries.

Staal, who is currently on long-term IR but can be removed at any time, suffered his knee injury Jan. 6 against NY Rangers. He's entering the fourth week of a 4-6 week progression period.

Despres suffered a Grade 1 MCL tear Jan. 10 against Ottawa. He is entering the third week of a 3-4 week recovery period.
