Penguins Defenseman Kris Letang Added to the 2012 NHL All-Star Game

The National Hockey League announced this afternoon that Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has been added to the roster for the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, which will be played this coming Sunday, Jan. 29, at 4 p.m. at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.

Letang will be making his second-consecutive All-Star appearance after making his debut last season in Carolina after being voted into the game by the fans. Letang was one of the stars of last year’s game, tallying two goals for Team Staal.

Letang, 24, returned to Pittsburgh’s lineup last week with great success, scoring two goals and adding two assists for four points in three games. He had missed the previous 21 games while dealing with a broken nose and concussion.

For the season the Montreal, Quebec native has totaled five goals, 18 assists, 23 points and a plus-9 rating in 25 games. Letang’s 18 assists rank third on the team, while his 23 points place fifth. Letang is averaging 0.92 points per game this season, the second-best average among all NHL blueliners behind Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson (0.94 avg.).

Despite missing almost two full months due to injury, Letang was nearly voted to the game by the fans for the second-straight year. Letang finished No. 6 overall among defensemen with 452,979 votes.

Letang joins Evgeni Malkin on the All-Star roster, giving the Penguins at least two All-Star representatives for the fourth straight season.
