Evgeni Malkin Named NHL \u2018Third Star\u2019 of the Week
Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was named NHL ‘Third Star’ for the week ending Jan. 15. This is Malkin’s third league honor this season after previously being named ‘Third Star’ for the month of December and ‘Third Star’ for the week ending Dec. 18.

Malkin was the catalyst for the Penguins ending their six-game losing streak last week, tallying five goals, seven points and 20 shots on goal in four games. On Sunday afternoon, Malkin scored natural hat trick in the third period to break open a tie game and added two assists in a 6-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Malkin scored goals in three of Pittsburgh’s four games last week, including the game-winning goal in both of the Penguins’ victories. The 2009 Art Ross Trophy winner (NHL scoring leader) currently places second in this season’s point race with 51 points (21G-30A) in 37 games – one point behind league leader Henrik Sedin of Vancouver.

Malkin enters Tuesday night’s meeting against the Carolina Hurricanes ranked in the NHL’s top-five in several major statistical categories in addition to the points race – point-per-game average (1.38, 1st); game-winning goals (6, T-2nd); and shots on goals (176, 2nd).
