Penguins Crosby Surges to Fourth Place Among Forwards in All-Star Fan Balloting
Pittsburgh Penguins fans around the country took notice of Sidney Crosby’s successful return to the lineup by casting 132,335 votes last week in an effort to elect Crosby to the 2012 NHL All-Star Game as part of All-Star Fan Balloting presented by XM.

Crosby’s surge gives him a cumulative total of 206,863 votes during the first two weeks, making him the fourth-highest vote-getter among forwards. Crosby trails third-place Jason Spezza of the Ottawa Senators by just 2,592 votes.

Crosby, who has finished as the leading vote-getter during each of the past four All-Star Games (2011, ’09, ’08, ’07), ranked ninth overall among forwards last week.

A trio of Crosby’s teammates who were also elected by the fans to last year’s All-Star Game – goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, defenseman Kris Letang and forward Evgeni Malkin – also rank among the leading vote-getters at their respective positions.

Fleury, who is tied for the NHL lead with 13 wins, places second among goaltenders with 169,721 votes. He trails Boston’s Tim Thomas by a mere 5,594 votes.

Letang, the NHL’s second-highest scoring blueliner (tied) with 19 points (3G-16A), sits third among defensemen with 195,528 votes. Letang is 18,089 votes behind second-place Dion Phaneuf of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Malkin, the Penguins’ second-leading scorer with 22 points (8G-14A), ranks 11th among forwards with 110,576 votes.

Forwards James Neal (95,454 votes) and Jordan Staal (65,728) – Pittsburgh’s top-two goal scorers – are also on the ballot.

All-Star Fan Balloting will continue through Jan. 4. Fans can cast their votes for their favorite Penguins players here.
