Works,” opened Friday for public skating.

The rink – legacy of last year’s NHL Winter classic – is located at the intersection of 26th and Sidney Streets in the SouthSide Works complex.

“Penguins Pond presented by Highmark” will operate daily through Jan. 8. Public skating will be available every day, and groups of 20 or more also may reserve the ice for skating and/or hockey.

Both the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) will be playing games on the outdoor ice throughout the seven-week period of operation.

Official grand opening ceremonies were held on Saturday at 11 a.m., where fans had the chance to skate with Hockey Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier; the team’s popular mascot, Iceburgh; and the Penguins’ Ice Crew.

In addition to the Penguins, the outdoor rink is a joint effort of presenting sponsor Highmark, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), rink operator Magic Ice USA and the Soffer Organization which operates SouthSide Works

The Penguins operated an outdoor rink for 10 days at last year’s NHL Winter Classic on the North Shore and the facility was so popular the team decided to make it an annual winter fixture.

“In many ways, Penguins Pond at SouthSide Works will be the lasting legacy of the Winter Classic -- and a focal point for kids and families to skate together outdoors during the holiday season,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Penguins. “Thanks to the efforts of Highmark, the URA, Magic Ice USA and the Soffer Organization, we were able to come up with a great new site for the rink at SouthSide Works that will enable us to keep it open for more than 50 days and provide a unique winter benefit to the community.”

Public skating will be $7 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. Skate rental is $3. Groups of 20 or more may reserve the ice by calling 412.877.6475.

In conjunction with the rink, a special PensGear store will be located nearby at 442 27th Street. “PensGear powered by Reebok” will carry a full selection of Penguins merchandise and holiday gift items.
