and youth hockey starting Friday, Nov. 18, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced today.

The outdoor community ice rink will be located at the intersection of 26th and Sidney Streets in the SouthSide Works complex. In addition to the Penguins, it is a joint effort of presenting sponsor Highmark, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), rink operator Magic Ice and the Soffer Organization which operates SouthSide Works.

“Penguins Pond presented by Highmark” will operate from Nov. 18 through Jan. 8. Public skating will be available every day, and groups of 20 or more also may reserve the ice for skating and/or hockey.

Both the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) will be playing games throughout the seven-week period of operation.

The Penguins operated an outdoor rink for 10 days at last year’s NHL Winter Classic on the North Shore and the facility was so popular the team decided to make it an annual winter fixture.

“In many ways, Penguins Pond presented by Highmark will be the lasting legacy of the Winter Classic -- and a focal point for kids and families to skate together outdoors during the holiday season,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Penguins. “Thanks to the efforts of Highmark, the URA, Magic Ice and the Soffer Organization, we were able to come up with a great new site for the rink at SouthSide Works that will enable us to keep it open for more than 50 days and provide a unique winter benefit to the community.”

Public skating will be $7 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. Skate rental is $3. Groups of 20 or more may reserve the ice by calling 412.877.6475.

Public skating will be available from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. on Nov. 18.

PJ Dick/Trumbull Corporation constructed the sandbox that is the foundation of the rink and the Rink Specialists company is building the actual rink. Magic Ice will be operating the facility.
