Women\u2019s College Hockey Update
By Megan Cloutier

Only a few weeks into the College Hockey season and all three women’s teams in the area are off to a great start. Robert Morris University won all three of their preseason games and is 3-1 in the regular season. Mercyhurst also won all of their preseason games and are now 4-1-1 in the regular season. Penn State is 2-1 in their season.

Not only has Robert Morris won all but one of their games thus far, they have been dominating the ice. Including preseason, five of their six wins were won by three or more goals.

Many of the ladies have individually made an impact on the team. Freshman Rebecca Vint for example became the first rookie in Robert Morris history to ever score multiple goals in a season opener. Vint finished the first game with two goals and an assist. Goaltender Kristen DiCiocco made her junior season debut with by shutting out Lindenwood. Senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney tied Robert Morris’ all time points’ record in the second game of the season.

While winning four of their six games Mercyhurst has managed to earn three shutouts. Mercyhurst is not just strong defensively, the team has also managed to score at least three goals in every one of their games, including pre season, except the two games they lost.

Many of the Mercyhurst ladies have made a strong impact on these wins. Senior goaltender Hillary Pattenden has made the largest impact on the team, recording three shut outs this season and fifteen in her career made a total of 73 saves between the three games. Kelley Steadman has a total of 4 goals and 2 assists this season, averaging a point per game. Bailey Bram has 6 goals thus far, including a hat trick against Providence College. Christine Bestland has a total of 7 points this season, including 3 goals and 4 assists giving her the most points on the entire team.

While Penn State has only played three games this season, they have won two of the games, including a 6-1 victory against Buffalo.

Penn State’s team includes three girls from the Pittsburgh area. Katie Vaughan ( Pittsburgh, Pa – Pittsburgh Penguins Elite), Cara Mendelson (Pittsburgh, Pa – Steel City Selects) and Tess Weaver (Windber, Pa – Pittsburgh Penguins Elite).
